is a complex mix of french, english, african, and indian. A lot of indian, and a lot of Hindu (52% of the 1.2m pop). But english is the official language, spoken with a heavy french accent (which is the language the speak at home - with a creole twist). They are an amazing people - polite and kind - even the 'hawkers' the street/beach sellers - are polite - they don't pester at all! But there's more - they are intelligent and thoughtful and humorous. In many ways they are what makes this place so special.
The tour was interesting - sugar cane is there largest industry - they make sugar (obviously) but also use the leaves to thatch the roofs and the waste to make 35% of their energy. I could bore you with more facts but suffice to say it was good to see something of the island and get a glimpse of this complex place.
In 48 hours we will be on our way home - it feels timely :)
